The City of Palo Alto considers that environmental stewardship is not just a catch phrase, it’s a way of life. City government itself has been designated a "green business" and the city council lists "climate protection" as one of its top priorities. Important parts of this effort are the City of Palo Alto Utilities Renewable Energy Program, the City’s Zero Waste Initiative, and a local commitment to alternative transportation.

Stanford's Sustainability Working Group, organized in 2006, is advisory to the President and Provost, and is charged with the preparation of policy and program recommendations designed to:
- Further learning, knowledge, and community service in the context of sustainability,
- Encourage faculty, staff, and students to be active examples of good stewards, and provide their expertise to the university, and
- Continuously improve Stanford's leadership and practice of sustainability.

Few business-related organizations carry the prominence or the sway of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG). Founded in 1977 by David Packard, SVLG has grown to become the largest organization of its kind in Silicon Valley. Today SVLG has more than 200 member companies. Economically, SVLG has become a cornerstone of the Valley; collectively, its members contribute more than $1 trillion to the global economy, an amount equal to the gross national product of Italy.
Joint Venture Silicon Valley was formed in 1992 by a group of visionary people decided the best way to solve problems was to create a neutral forum, bringing together leaders from business, labor, government, the universities, and the non-profit sector to think outside the box and build creative solutions.
Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) is a collaboration of businesses, governments, and non-governmental organizations that are identifying and addressing environmental and resource pressures in the Valley. As its first initiative, SSV is engaging prominent Valley organizations to work towards a goal of reducing regional carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions 20% below 1990 levels by 2010.
